Eastern Subterranean Termites

If your North Carolina home has a termite infestation, most likely it is the Eastern subterranean termites. These pests are widely known and distributed throughout the eastern U.S.

In North Carolina, Eastern subterranean termites will start swarming after our spring showers begin. They can enter homes through tiny cracks in the foundation and flooring. If your home has a particularly dark and damp area (like a wet area behind a wall caused by a leak), the termites might form a helper nest in that perfect location.

How do you know if you haveĀ a Eastern Subterranean Termite Infestation?

The subterranean termite infestation can be found either on the exterior or interior of your home. If you see mud tubes along the outside of your home, this is a sign they are present. These tubes look like long tunnels made of wool and dirt.

Another sign is soft wood in the home that is hollow, darkening in color. If you see discarded wings near doors or on windowsills, this also indicates that swarmers have entered your home.

Formosan Subterranean Termites

Formosan subterranean termitesĀ are often referred to as “super termites” because they are the most aggressive and devious in nature. This termite species is known to chew quickly through wood and flooring undetected. A mature colony could completely devour a 2×4 piece of wood in 25 days.

They love dark, humid places, like attics, crawl spaces, and basements, and are particularly drawn to homes with leaks and drainage issues.

Following heavy rain during spring and early summer, tens of thousands of Formosan termite swarmers can emerge from a single colony. These swarmers are often confused with flying ants.
